The Bottle Series
Building the anagama kiln led to several creative avenues for Meyer. The kiln-themed installations were one. Another has been a continuing series of bottle forms. Since the anagama can have vastly different vocabularies front to back, it was necessary to place pieces throughout. The first bottles toward that end were hastily thrown and without artful intent. But as the series grew, they aspired toward the “perfect imperfection” he so celebrates generally. Recently they have found a home as the centerpiece of larger wall installations; metaphors for human habitation.

The Crucible Series
Industry and its consequences on the earth had been my focus from my earliest sculpture. The capacity to pour bronze led ultimately to the Clay To Bronze NCECA event where ceramic artists translated their sensibilities to this compatible material. Years later my colleague was storing huge crucible forms near my studio, their quiet strength became my daily experience. They are vessels, central icons of industry and high heat process, symbols of Gestalt and central to the heritage and mystery of alchemy. Attending elements of the casting process offered limitless creative opportunities.
